Grantchester season 5 renewal hopes: Will the series return to ITV?
For the time being, there is no word one way or another, but we want to start off by saying something to all American fans of the show — don’t fret if you hear the words “series finale” thrown around today. In the United Kingdom, a season is often referred to as a series. The episode tonight is really nothing more than a season finale; there is certainly a chance still for more episodes down the road.
As for whether or not this is something that is actually going to happen, the jury is still out on that … but we’re hopeful. A good way to think about the show’s season 5 future is simply this — if the intention was to end the series after a season 4, why would they have even bothered to cast Tom Brittney at all? Our feeling is that if that was the case, they would’ve just tried to hold onto James Norton for the full season and delivered an ending that functioned as the conclusion for everyone. The transition from Sidney to Will on the series to us is a pretty good sign that there’s going to be a little bit more of the show down the line, or at least that producers want there to be.
The biggest reason we’re hopeful here is just that Grantchester is one of those shows that has a loyal following all over the world. It’s got a stable US home over on PBS, and it’s got the potential to still build even more of an audience. It appeals to everyone and there is still something inherently awesome about that. We’re hoping that there will be some official word about a season 5 at some point over the next few months and that we can see another batch of episodes at some point in 2020. The main reason why there was such a delay from the end of season 4 to the start of season 5 was, in part, the super-busy schedule of Norton, who had another show in McMafia that he was also attending to.
Here’s to hoping for more adventures, mysteries, and chances to see the relationship between Geordie and Will develop. They are now responsible for carrying the show forward and we think that they’ve got a good chance to really make great things happen.
