Gotham season 5 episode 6 review: Theresa Walker makes Bane

Tonight, Gotham season 5 episode 6 was intent on telling you an origin story for one of Batman’s biggest villains in Bane. Of course, there was a little bit of fun to be had along the way.

Before we get to some of that, let’s focus on some of the other sideplots. For starters, Oswald Cobblepot was determined to try and leave the city. Why? He decided that he’d done everything that he could in order to overtake the city and he was ready to move on. You know that if a city’s too unsafe for criminals, it’s a pretty big deal. Meanwhile, with Ed running about in his current state, who would want to deal with him?

For now, Penguin and Selina have a deal to work together in an effort to escape the lair of Magpie, a new villain who was desperate to capture them and steal Oswald’s stuff.

Let’s get back to Gordon now, as Eduardo Dorrance did just about everything within his power to bring about more chaos — he was following the orders of his boss Theresa Walker, who gave him a new purpose after everything that he’d been through including a near-death experience. The problem for Gordon is that for a while, Dorrance had him vulnerable — he also had Lee Thompkins, who was clearly confused and seems to have no idea of what she’s been up to over the past few months. The last thing she remembered was Nygma stabbing her. Gordon was able to take Dorrance out (at least for now), and get Lee to safety.

There were two things that Jim clearly didn’t count on here. For starters, he didn’t imagine being in a position where Dorrance could come back — we saw Walker treat him, deliver a mask, and prepare to take him to Hugo Strange. Basically, we saw here the early stages of Bane. Meanwhile, he didn’t count on Lee being the accomplice to Nygma at Haven — the two of them both were under her control.

Jim refused to talk to her, so what other way was there for her to tell Jim about her pregnancy than to just blurt it out in front of Lee … and Bullock? The truth is now out there…

Jeremiah’s latest move

While Bruce wasn’t exactly front and center for most of the episode, Jeremiah found himself a prisoner of sorts in Alfred, who he took great pleasure in tormenting. He was ready to make his move on Bruce, and he was also ready to make Alfred stand by and watch.

CarterMatt Verdict

The final season of Gotham remains crazy and mad-cap, and one of the things that we’ve learned over time here is that there really is nothing better. It’s a weird show, but also a particularly wonderful one to dive into still.
