The Voice UK review: Moya, Nikki Ambers, Eva Campbell, and more blind auditions

Equipped to Overcome – We kick off tonight’s episode with a performance from a girl group! This trio is hoping to bring a lot of fun to the show from start to finish — and gospel vibes. There were some shaky notes in here but, at the same time, the potential is limitless thanks to the range that these three have. They chose Tom Jones as their coach, which means that he has a trio to go along with the other coaches this season.
Sherie Hartill – Sherie is the sort of performer who’s got the backstory that typically necessitates that someone gets a chair-turn and a move to the next round on a show like this. It just didn’t happen here. While her voice was solid, there wasn’t enough of a distinct pop to it to get that turn.
Eva Campbell – She’s a young singer from Ireland who has a really earthy, interesting voice. It’s distinct and that is the sort of thing that this show really likes to for. We just hope that she’s going to be able to find a great bit of success working with Olly Murs and the two take the time to find songs that are going to line up well with what she can do.
Khadija – This is not a song we’re altogether familiar with, but we did like the sort of smoky-jazz vibe to it along with the divine Spanish-language sections. It was weird hearing the coaches say that this was a great Olly Murs choice because really, this sort of genre-bender felt so much better for Team will.i.am, who ended up turning for her.
Craig Roystone – Cool voice. He’s got an interesting vibe that made us think he could be one of those sorts of interesting vocal chameleons had he been able to move on. That didn’t happen, mostly because he didn’t end up getting a chair turn. We do think the coaches should regret this one!
Nikki Ambers – She’s got some experience performing from when she was younger and in a group, and we appreciate that she’s thought a lot about her musical identity and also what sort of artist she wants to be. The vocal chops are definitely there for her to be a pop star; now, we just need to see even more vocal power and confidence from her. Team Olly.
Seth Oraeki – The guy can really dance! This is one of our favorite sort of contestants we get on a show like this, mostly because he’s super-versatile with everything that he brings to the table. He can sing (as we saw in his audition), but he’s also got some legitimate dance chops. He’s also now a part of Team Will.
Moya – The final performer of the night and someone who does have some performing background — not that this bothers us all that much. We think that she delivered a STELLAR audition to close the show and it’s something that could set the stage for her doing well in the live rounds. She can fill just about any room. Team Jennifer.
