Saturday Night Live music: Meek Mill performs ‘Going Bad,’ ‘Championships’

So what did Meek choose to do? For the first song, Meek chose to perform “Going Bad,” one of his more popular recent songs with lyrics that were stuffed ful content. This was a pretty simple staging for his performance, and we do wonder whether the dancers and the outfits were actually somewhat of a distraction for anyone out there trying to watch the performance itself. (Fabolous also joined him for the first performance.)
Do we think that he brought all of the energy that he needed in order to give us a great sketch? Sure, but at the same time we do wonder if he intended to have the dancers dominate so much of the attention. There were only two of them but in between their movements and their timing, it was really hard to ignore them for much of this. We do still think, though, that he is one of the better rappers that the show’s had on the air in the past few years.
Second performance
Here, we saw a performance that felt more like the focus was on the right thing: Meek’s rapping. The track was “Championships” and he was at the center of the stage. There were no dancers, socially-conscious lyrics, and also a painful message. We hope that there are some people who actually do listen to what he was saying here rather than just thinking that this was yet another performance from a musical guest on the show. So many of these do have a tendency to be rather forgettable.
