Gotham season 5 episode 5 preview: BD Wong returns as Hugo Strange

Hugo -

There are so many things to be excited about when it comes to Gotham season 5 episode 5, starting with the return of a familiar face.

Are we excited to see the show’s eventual version of Bane in Eduardo Dorrance? Absolutely, but we also don’t know if we’ll like their interpretation of the character just yet and with Bane being such a huge character in the Batman universe we don’t want to make any broad assumptions.

With that, the top story for us is instead getting the chance to see the grand return of BD Wong as Hugo Strange. This is one of the most-underrated Batman villains out there (and BD Wong is incredible in the role!), mostly when it comes to the psychological and scientific threat that he poses to Gotham City as a whole. We’ve seen him be responsible for the creation of many monsters to date, and you have to think that he could cause some more chaos still. He’s apparently not the only person capable of powering up villains though — just take a look at what Ivy did for Selina a little bit earlier this season.

For a few more details about Hugo Strange and also Dorrance’s arrival, CarterMatt has the Gotham season 5 episode 5 synopsis for you with some more information:

A military task force, led by Eduardo Dorrance (guest star Shane West) is called in to provide relief to Gotham. Meanwhile, Nygma looks for answers from Penguin, who leads him back to Hugo Strange (guest star BD Wong). Then, Bruce is concerned about Selina’s recent behavior in the all-new “Pena Dura” episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Jan. 31 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GTH-505) (TV-14 L, V)

So how quickly will Gotham try to evolve Dorrance into Bane? They’re going to have to move fast given that they don’t exactly have a lot of time in order to build him up. This is a short final season for the show and the writers are going to want to show off Bane with at least some of his powers in play. They also need to figure out how a guy goes from being involved in the relief effort to becoming a notorious villain. There’s gotta be a good motivation here and that could be a problem for the show: Trying to find a way to make this happen in a compelling way in a very-short period of time.

As for the Bruce / Selina story, one thing is certainly clear: He better be concerned, given that we don’t exactly think that things are going to be getting any better in the near future. More than likely, we’re only going to see them get even worse.
