NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 13 review: The meaning of life

Better Angels

Tonight, NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 13 arrived with “Better Angels.” This was a story set up to be emotional and after getting through all of it, we can say with confidence that it delivered.

At the center of this story was Kensi Blye doing everything that she could in order to help David, a man who did everything that he could to prove the existence of chemical weapons. He wanted to take down some popular people but there was an attempt at his life before he could prove anything. The attack left him pinned to a car and the bulk of the story tonight was about one thing: Whether or not the team could get justice for David and also stop future attacks from happening.

From an action standpoint, this episode had a lot of it — we had a mad dash for the drive and in the end, it was actually Arlo who ended up retrieving it. We’re not entirely sure that all of his methods were great, but he and the rest of the standard team was able to get the job done out in the field.

What made this episode so great came mostly from an emotional standpoint, as Kensi spent the end of the episode alongside Arlo helping to console him as he lived out some of his final moments. He got a chance in order to speak with his wife one final time, he learned that the flash drive was found, and at that point, he decided that he was ready to die. The only thing that was keeping him alive was the car being there and when it was moved, it was going to mean the end of his life. We hope for a miracle, but sometimes life doesn’t get that.

The bad news was that the team didn’t get anything they wanted out of the drive and that David ended up being lost. yet, he realized that his life held great meaning and this one mission didn’t define him. Instead, it was about family, about love, and about experiences. Strip everything away, and it’s the life that matters — that’s the message to take away from this episode. It may not have been stuffed to the brim with important long-term stories, but we had a fantastic Daniela Ruah performance and it will be remembered. That has to mean something when the dust settles on this season.
