Cable Ratings: How Project Blue Book, Vikings fared on History

In this edition of Cable Ratings, we’re putting the focus entirely on History shows! There’s certainly a good reason to do so, given that we’ve got a network stalwart in Vikings to talk about here to go along with a show in Project Blue Book that is really just starting to find itself.

Let’s kick things off in this piece by focusing on Vikings, mostly because this is the show that does typically command a good bit of attention — especially with the recent announcement that season 6 is going to be the final one. Wednesday night’s new episode ended up generating a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic alongside 1.54 million viewers. Those are slightly above some recent series-low ratings for the show, and they do indicate that the audience is at least steady at this point.

With the announcement out there now that Vikings is ending with season 6, we don’t really anticipate there being too many fluctuations with the ratings moving forward. Because most viewers now know that there is an end date in sight with this show, they will likely stick with it — it’s a little bit easier to do that when you’ve got a good sense of when it is coming off the air.

As for Project Blue Book, meanwhile, the new drama series got off to a decent start with a 0.4 rating and just over 2.2 million viewers. This is a show that is skewing a little bit older than Vikings, but that isn’t really too much of a surprise when you think a little bit about the subject matter here with the new show. The larger question that you have to think about here is about longevity and whether or not Project Blue Book is the sort of series that can find some week-to-week stability. It’s one of the reasons why we don’t get too geared up one way or another when it comes to premiere ratings — it’s often hard to tell whether or not viewers will be coming back for more. Once you get to around episode 3 or episode 4, you tend to get a much better indication of a show’s real audience and the people who are going to stick around.

Make no mistake, though — History would like to keep Project Blue Book around, mostly because they don’t have a heck of a lot of scripted drama series. They need to keep as many going as possible.
