The Voice UK review: Emmanuel Smith, Cedric Neal, Connie Lamb audition

Tonight, The Voice UK came back on the air to deliver some great performances — and hopefully some artists who are legitimate winner candidates. We want to hear good singers, but beyond that we want to see people take some risks and show that they can be a star outside of the show. It’s a rare quality that we don’t often see, but it’s one that we certainly appreciate whenever we do see it.

Bukky Oronti – She kicked off the episode tonight with a powerful performance of “Say Something” that showed that she has a lot of power. She does have work to do on her range, but we actually think it’s rather nice that she didn’t push herself too far here and stuck with precisely what she knew she could do. She also picked a coach that could really help her with some of this. Team Jennifer.

Dean Mac – He’s a super-confident guy who loves to talk about his baby-making music … but this may have been a lesson in humility. He’s not a bad singer, but he’s not a particularly great one, either. his voice didn’t match his swagger and there were some shaky notes in here. That’s why we aren’t shocked that he left the show without any chairs.

Connie Lamb – She feels like she could actually be a TV host down the line (she has the tone and the sound of her voice for it), but beyond that, she also does have a really remarkable voice that has the capacity to do great things this season. She does need to shake out some of the nerves and get more control, but “Skyscraper” is a really tough song to sing. Team Olly.

Cedric Neal – He’s originally from our hometown of Dallas, Texas! Also, he can SING and make it into something incredibly fun and energetic. There was so much to like about this performance and his energy — it wasn’t perfect vocally, but he’s got the stage resume to know how move about and how to win over a crowd. Team Tom.

Chris Daley – We feel for Chris, since we think he’s probably a guy who could deliver a better concert than this particular show allowed us to see. There was some genuine emotion in what he did, but it just didn’t translate to the coaches for whatever reason. No chair.

The Flat Pack – We loved this — while it’s clear that these guys are still super-raw, there’s something so charming about their blue-collar status and their harmonies. They’ve got a good backstory, and they certainly have a great coach who knows their type of music really well. That’s sometimes all you can hope for with this show. Team Olly.

Grace Latchford – Her original song started off really shaky, and we do think she didn’t get really comfortable being on the stage until about halfway through the performance. Yet, when she got going in this we started to see some raw talent that has a lot of potential. She’s not a contender now, but with Tom’s tutelage she could get there. Team Tom.

Emmanuel Smith – Our final performer of the night. Emmanuel originally hails from Ghana, and he’s done his fair share of worship singing and mentoring. His song choice of “Hallelujah” tonight was perfect and we really do think that he understood the lyrics perfectly. Given that this was Jennifer Hudson’s favorite song, we thought she was a lock to get him! Yet, that didn’t happen. Team Jennifer.
