Vikings season 5 episode 18 preview: Ivar’s surprise & more in ‘Baldur’

Vikings season 5 episode 18, entitled “Baldur,” is coming up on History in one week; given where many of these characters are at present in the story, we don’t have to tell you that this episode will be an important one. Will this be the episode where Floki starts to move closer to reuniting with some other major characters? We hope so, just as we’re also hoping that this will give us a chance to understand better what’s going to happen with Ivar next. We know that once his child is born (or what he thinks is his child) he plans to head back to England and finish off the fight that Harald started and lost, but what he doesn’t know is that Harald and Bjorn have joined forces to reclaim Kattegat. Add to the mix a Viking army showing up on Alfred’s shores and there is battle about to erupt at every corner.

Below, CarterMatt offers up the official Vikings season 5 episode 18 synopsis for some additional news as to what’s coming next:

Hvitserk is severely tested. Floki makes an amazing discovery. Freydis gives Ivar a surprise. Ubbe negotiates with the three Danish Kings that have massed their armies in Reading, but the negotiations may have a perilous outcome.

Unfortunately, this synopsis alone does not serve to answer much a key question many want more information on: The status of Lagertha. Where in the world is she? She’s been MIA from the story as of late but hopefully that’s going to change as we enter the home stretch here. The show needs her, and in general we are expecting an escalation now that it is officially known that the upcoming sixth season is going to be the last. The series now has a chance to really look at its own mortality in a way that perhaps it didn’t before. We’ve always known that the story with this particular batch of characters would eventually come to a close and we’re now at a point where that very thing is happening.

Before that series finale airs though, you have to imagine that there will be some more dramatic character deaths and also some sort of realignment in terms of alliances and control. Vikings is a show that is often about strategy and relationships more so than it is bloody battles (as awesome as those are to watch).

So who should you be worried about at the moment? Out of the characters in the synopsis, we’re probably most concerned for Hvitserk — after all, the guy hasn’t exactly been altogether safe for most of the second half of this season. Ivar has forced him to leave Kattegat and become an ambassador for Ivar to help gain allies for Ivar’s eventual march on Alfred. Hvitserk is the one son that really hasn’t been able to find his footing in this world and just doesn’t know where he fits in, so we are hoping that this journey (even if it’s a difficult one) will help him with that.
