Golden Globes 2019 picks: Bodyguard, Caitriona Balfe, The Good Place, more

Golden Globes

As we look ahead towards the 2019 Golden Globes on Sunday, who are some of our personal picks? While wouldn’t say that these picks are necessarily the ones we think will win, these are some of the people we think are absolutely deserving of some gold.

Drama Series – Bodyguard. The BBC / Netflix series was smart, well-written, and thoroughly intense throughout its six-episode first season, at times feeling more like a movie than a series. Richard Madden managed to totally out-shine Robb Stark as David Budd, and gave his performance of his career.

Drama Actor – Richard Madden, Bodyguard. Richard’s performance here was on another level as he took on a tormented man who wanted to do the best job that he could; yet, at the same time, he struggled with PTSD and found himself in a situation where his survival was almost impossible.

Drama Actress – Caitriona Balfe, Outlander. How could you ask for anything more from Balfe in this performance? She continues to find a way in order to evolve Claire Fraser and bring something new and interesting to the role. It’s not often we can say someone gets better and better every year but we absolutely find that to be the case here.

Comedy Series – The Good Place. NBC has something that is rare in this modern era — a network show is actually receiving stronger reviews than cable.

Comedy Actor – Bill Hader, Barry. The premise of this show was so out there that there was a reasonably good chance it just wasn’t going to work. Yet, somehow the incredibly-gifted Hader found a way to make a hitman-turned wannabe actor work.

Comedy Actress – Kristen Bell, The Good Place. You can’t recognize the show without the actress responsible for Eleanor, right? She’s brought so much humor to the show, but perhaps some of her best moments are when you see a little bit of vulnerability.

Limited Series – Sharp Objects. We’re not going to say that it was particularly easy show to watch, but in between Amy Adams’ performance, the writing, and the visual style, this was extremely compelling entertainment from start to finish.

Limited Series Actress – Regina King, Seven Seconds. We’re still bitter that this show got canceled after only one year, since King was extraordinary and there was potential for there to be so much more.

Limited Series Actor – Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace. We’re not sure that there is a more consensus pick for this award anywhere across the board. Stellar performance and a high-profile product.

Supporting Actress – Alex Borstein, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. From start to finish Borstein has been fantastic in this series, which is so much more than just your standard comedy.

Supporting Actor – Henry Winkler, Barry. You can really say the say thing about Winkler here, someone who has consistently delivered and gotten recognition in a genre that is often ignored beyond its own specific category.
