Legends of Tomorrow season 5 renewal odds: A Ratings Progress Report

Legends of Tomorrow season 4 premiere

We’re back with another edition of our Ratings Progress Report series, and this time around, we’re talking Legends of Tomorrow!

Before continuing further, we’ll go ahead and admit to our bias here — Legends of Tomorrow is our favorite superhero series at CarterMatt. We even said that in a video at the end of last year! (Watch it below, and subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for some other updates.) We love the spirit of the series, the quality of the writing, and the depth of the performances. It’s one of those shows that remembers that it’s okay to let characters have fun, mostly because that makes the serious moments all the more important when some of the dust settles.

Now, let’s dive into things from a ratings point of view since this is where you could have some very-clear causes for concern. Season 4 of Legends of Tomorrow is averaging a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and is down more than 30% from the season 3 average. That’s not good, but if there is a silver lining here, it’s that the show actually improved its demo viewership, week by week, for the final five episodes of 2018. To go along with that, this show proportionally has the largest DVR audience out of any show on network TV, at least in terms of live+7 viewing. That’s without eventually mentioning the streams that likely come via the CW app, where you can watch recent episodes without validating a subscription. The CW has one of the best ways for viewers to catch up on their programming out of any that are out there.

There is also one other thing to remember here amidst this discussion: Crisis on Infinite Earths. This epic, world-changing crossover event is happening later this year, and we like to think that The CW would like the Legends around for it somehow. Sure, they did not appear in the most-recent Elseworlds event (save for a brief cameo from Gary), but we do think that there’s some merit in bringing them on board even for just a smaller role there. You want to give yourself that option … though there’s no guarantee that they would leap at the opportunity.

Our current renewal odds

At the moment, we’re optimistic for more Legends just because The CW seems to be pretty good at allowing shows to end on their own terms, rather than blindsiding them with a cancellation. We’re a little worried about the long hiatus here (it’s not returning until spring), but we think that there’s at least one more batch of episodes coming. As for whether or not that batch is labeled the final one, that’s something that there could be a decision on later this year.
