CNN New Year’s Eve: Dave Chappelle talks Kevin Hart, Oscars, more

Going into tonight’s CNN New Year’s Eve broadcast, we knew that there would be some interesting moments. We knew that especially when we heard that Dave Chappelle was going to be making an appearance.

How could this not be entertaining? That’s the first thing to think about here, given that Chappelle is one of the most famous and elusive comedians out there. He only really does interviews when he feels like it and he’s not beholden to the typical rules of show business. The hardest part of the broadcast was just waiting for it to actually happen — CNN kept hyping it up virtually all night, really to the point where we weren’t actually sure that it was going to happen at a given point.

When the interview finally kicked off, Chappelle talked about what he considered to be the “greatest single professional year” that he’s ever had. That includes him having a role in A Star Is Born and then also a number of Netflix specials that aired throughout the year. He went back to Ohio, and that’s where the interview was set.

As for Kevin Hart and the Oscars, Chappelle referred to him as a “great comedian” and said that he was sad that he wasn’t going to be hosting the show. He also said that they would never want him since they didn’t want Kevin over some comments that he made in his past. (He also randomly shouting out Kevin during the broadcast.)

Of course, there was a little bit of political discussion thrown in there. Chappelle opted to not get especially political during the interview, saying instead that “I’m just trying to focus on the most positive thing” and that is helping his community and making sure that people love each other. Chappelle has dabbled in political discussion here and there, but this certainly does not surprise us.

As for what’s coming up in the new year for Chappelle, his answer was simple: Not much. He didn’t really want to schedule things out and he gets a chance to really do whatever he wanted in the new year. One way or another, we have a feeling that we’re going to be seeing him one way or another in the future. (Personally, we hope that we’re going to be seeing him on SNL in the future.)
