Gotham season 5 spoilers: Cameron Monaghan on Jeremiah’s mindset

Gotham season 4 episode 21

Entering Gotham season 5, it’s clear that there are a number of villains who have an important story to tell. Yet, simultaneously it also does feel like Cameron Monaghan’s Jeremiah is king of the castle. He is one of the few villains to execute a plan at least somewhat-successfully and he’s caused chaos on the grandest scale imaginable. The dangerous landscape of Gotham through season 5 is almost entirely his handiwork and watching what happens from here is going to be fascinating and chilling at the same time.

So where is Jeremiah’s mindset going to be when the show returns? For the immediate future, he may actually be satisfied … though there is still a larger prize that he will be looking to claim. For more, just take a look at what Monaghan had to say to ComicBook.com:

“It was interesting in the last season … His plan succeeded. He destroyed Gotham. He marooned it. He created his maze and his image and all this stuff, which is rare for any villain to succeed. So I think that he’s enjoying that he’s king of the roost and he’s sort of working within the shadows with a lot of respect and he’s sort of the big boogeyman in the city right now. I think he’s enjoying that and it’s giving him a sense of ego and hubris. He has got a girlfriend now and he’s more successful than he’s ever been.

“I think that what’s driving him right now and what his plan and what he’s building is, he’s always working or building something, is Bruce. Bruce is his special project. It’s the one thing that’s bothering him and nagging him because it’s the one thing he didn’t succeed at. That’s what we see with him now is he’s happyish but he’s still unsatisfied because he needs to show Bruce how much he loves him, or his twisted version of love.”

There is also something worth noting about Jeremiah’s story this season from an episode-title perspective: “ACE Chemicals” is set to be one of the episodes. For everyone out there who knows Batman well, then you will recognize that this place as essential to the mythos of the Joker. Given that Gotham is more or less its own thing, we don’t want to necessarily say that what happens on the show will be anywhere close to what happens with the Joker in the comics. (Heck, Gotham isn’t even calling Jeremiah the Joker in a technical sense.) Yet, at the same time it’s clear that the writers know what they’re doing and they named the episode this for a reason.
