Before we progress further, let’s take a look at some of Caitriona’s nomination history. She’s been giving the nod multiple times now for playing Claire Fraser, and she’s done an outstanding job every single year. While the Emmys have never given her the love that she deserves, she’s constantly found a way to pull it in here.
Now, let’s take a look at the entire field of nominees for 2019:
Caitriona Balfe (“Outlander”)
Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”)
Julia Roberts (“Homecoming”)
Keri Russell (“The Americans”)
This is a really good group, and you can easily make the case for anyone of them. Moss is the star of arguably the most-critically-acclaimed show on TV. Meanwhile, Oh is co-hosting the Globes and she’s on a critical favorite. Meanwhile, Roberts has had a legendary career (plus, Homecoming may be the best new show of the year) and Keri Russell is eligible for the final time for The Americans. It’s easy to make a case for any of them.
No matter who wins, it’s hard to imagine one person getting the majority of the votes. This is just too competitive of a field! Yet, Balfe could bring it in on the back of Outlander being a favorite from Hollywood Foreign Press voters and with her not getting the trophy in prior years. They may deem her work worthy this time, or they may also want to ensure that they make up for past years. It can be difficult to rationalize Golden Globe voting at times — they like to spread the love around. Sometimes, they want to give the award to some new blood; at other points, though, they often hand it out to someone who’s missed out on the love in the past.
Right now, Caitriona is probably an underdog given that most pre-show buzz tends to veer towards either Sandra Oh or Elisabeth Moss. Yet, Outlander and its actors have certainly been in the underdog position many times over.
The sad thing is that Balfe may not be able to get another Golden Globe nomination next year for Outlander, given that it may not be eligible depending on when it comes back for season 5. Our feeling personally is that season 5 may not be ready until 2020; if that happens, her work in that season would be eligible for the 2021 Globes.
