Beverly Hills, 90210 revival reportedly in the works; who’s on board?
According to a new report coming in via Deadline, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris are reportedly on board with a potential revival-of-sorts for the series, one that would allow them to play their original characters decades into the future. This is not a reboot in the sense that the CW 90210 series was back when it came out. Ironically, the two writer-producers behind this new revival in Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini worked on the 90210 series — they do at least understand this particular world to a certain degree.
At the moment, the new series is being set up at CBS TV Studios, and there are reportedly both traditional networks and streaming services showing some interest.
Do we think that this could actually work? While there are many details about the premise that are still very much a mystery, we do absolutely understand the appeal as to why networks would want it. There’d be most likely a moderate amount of interest, at least, right out of the gate. There was a time when this show was more or less everywhere in pop culture. It could be that again, even if it is just a blip on the radar.
As for how long we actually see this success going … that’s a totally different issue and a huge question mark for us at present. One of the biggest issues that we’ve seen revivals face over the past several years is that once the initial hype around the show is gone, you do still have to find a way to secure the audience. The ratings for these shows tend to wane and after a few episodes, the ratings are never what they once were. We’ve got a number of question marks regarding whether or not this new show could sustain people, and there is also an anti-reboot / revival sentiment out there among many who feel like these concepts are starting to be done to death.
Hopefully, there will be at least a little more news when it comes to this revival in the weeks ahead. We’ll keep you posted.
