See Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch in HBO’s new Brexit movie
What makes this movie appealing? For many, it will be the subject matter — Brexit is a subject discussed often in America on news programs or on comedy shows like Last Week Tonight. However, there really is not all that much in the way of context out there about it. This movie provides that, and it also features an award-worthy actor in Sherlock / Patrick Melrose star Benedict Cumberbatch taking on the role of Dominic Cummings. This is a man in part responsible for the Vote Leave campaign, which led to the Brexit vote ultimately coming out in the movement’s favor. This remains a heated subject today in Britain and all over the world, and we certainly think that it will remain that way a month ago.
We highly recommend that you check out the trailer below. After all, this is intense, thought-provoking, and it gives you a pretty good sense of what the network is hoping to pull off with this series as a whole. We really haven’t had many chances to see something quite like it on American television.

The result of the Brexit referendum in summer 2016 caused a political earthquake that laid waste to the normally stable British establishment and sent political tremors around the world. Cumberbatch portrays Dominic Cummings, who spearheaded the Vote Leave campaign. Rory Kinnear plays Craig Oliver, Prime Minister David Cameron’s director of communications and head of the Remain campaign.
This provocative feature-length drama goes behind the scenes, revealing the personalities, strategies and feuds of the Leave and Remain campaigns. The tactics employed by Vote Leave during the data-driven campaign swayed a historically silent voting bloc that would ultimately decide the outcome of the referendum, as well as affecting future elections around the world.

While we don’t want to coronate the project too early, Brexit may be a TV movie you see a little bit more of come awards season. It’s a chance to dive into a topic in a way that is unrelenting — especially since much of this saga is still unfolding. When you consider the recency of all of these events, it is somewhat of a surprise that this movie is being made in this amount of time in the first place.
