Luther season 5 premiere date, all episode air dates confirmed
Today, the BBC has confirmed that the Idris Elba series is going to be returning with new episodes starting on New Year’s Day at 9:00 p.m. local time. (For those unaware, New Year’s Day this year falls on a Tuesday.) This means that the network is setting themselves up for a rather fantastic January 1 — after all, remember that there’s going to also be a new special for Doctor Who, which is switching over here after previously doing a Christmas Special.
Following the Luther event on New Year’s Day, new episodes for the four-episode season are going to air on January 2, 3, and 4 at the same time — basically, the entire batch of episodes for the Idris Elba series are going to be wrapped up over the course of the week. What’s not to like about that especially for those of us that are done with all the waiting for new episodes!
As for what you can expect over the course of Luther season 5, be prepared for another twisted case that will push the title character of John Luther to the limit. This is a series that has always taken a long and complicated view of morality and we certainly do not think that this season will be any different. This is going to be a dark, complicated batch of episodes that offers up a wide array of twists and turns … and also may feature a surprise return. (Spoilers for the recent trailer ahead.)
At the end of the recent season 5 trailer, we got what appeared to be a pretty strong indicator that you will see the return of Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan, who has not been seen on the series in quite some time … mostly because she’s been presumed dead. The gravitational pull that she has on John Luther is incredibly strong, so we are hoping that we will have more then just a few seconds of her in the season.
The best thing about Luther
Unless there’s some stunning end at the conclusion of the series, it does feel like there’s always a chance to get more of the series down the line. This is the perfect sort of series that can come back anytime Elba and creator Neil Cross want to do more. There is something wonderful about Elba being able to come back and take on this role at any time knowing that we will all be ready for more Luther with open arms. How many opportunities are there for shows to have this sort of arrangement? It speaks to the quality of the show and also the confidence that the folks at the BBC have in what they have here.
As far as Luther and its airings on BBC America that is currently TBA, but we will have it for you here at CarterMatt as soon as it’s available.
