Golden Globes 2019 results: Sam Heughan, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Outlander among readers’ desired nominees
Throughout the month of November, we at CarterMatt have shared our annual Golden Globes wishlist article series! These articles have presented us with a golden opportunity to be able to talk about some performances and shows that really deserve some recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press as nominations come out next month. Tens of thousands of you have voted, and we’ve at least got a list here of some of who you want to see get a little bit of love.
Note that these wins don’t actually guarantee a nomination in the slightest; if nothing else, we just hope that they give a little momentum to some of these people and programs as we gear up for awards season to kick off!
Supporting Actress – Alycia Debnam-Carey, Fear the Walking Dead. This was a CLOSE competition between her and Sarah Drew, as both fan bases rallied hard for most of the final day of voting. Yet, it was Debnam-Carey who emerged in the end by a few hundred votes! Alycia’s performance this season has been outstanding and we hope she gets a bit of love at the awards this year.
Supporting Actor – Tobias Menzies, The Terror. Menzies is set to have an incredible 2019 thanks to The Crown season 3, but before getting to that, why not stop in and praise him for his fantastic work on the AMC limited-series gem, one that for whatever reason isn’t getting anywhere near the love that it should at present.
Actress, Limited Series / TV Movie – Hayley Atwell, Howards End. This was a fantastic performance by Atwell within a fantastic period drama from start to finish. We also think that it allowed her to showcase a different side and dimension than anything that we have seen from her to date.
Actor, Limited Series / TV Movie – Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose. This may be one of the best performances of the year, and yet, there aren’t anywhere near enough people out there aware of it. What do we need to do in order to convince you to watch Patrick Melrose?
Limited Series / Movie – Bodyguard and Sharp Objects (tie). It doesn’t happen often that we have a tie vote here at the site, but we don’t really mind it when these are the results! These two shows are fantastic, but what makes them great is that they are fantastic in totally different ways.
Actress, Drama Series – Caitriona Balfe, Outlander. What’s so great about Balfe this season is that once more, she is finding new dimensions of Claire to show off in between her vulnerability, her diplomacy, and her adaptability out in the field. She is very much the woman that she’s been, but Balfe is presenting an eagerness to explore new fronts.
Actor, Drama Series – Sam Heughan, Outlander. Jamie is an action hero, a strategist, a husband, and so much more in the series, and every one of these roles requires the perfect amount of delicacy and nuance. Jamie remains a gift that keeps on giving for viewers of this show; we just wish that he would score more actual nominations.
Drama Series – Outlander. While the series may be an underdog to get a real nomination at the Golden Globes this year, we’re more than happy to reward it with some sort of love here! This is a show that never gets recognized enough for its genre-twisting story, its performances, or its ability to recreate numerous continents and time periods.
Other honorable mentions
We want to give a little bit of special love here to Sarah Drew from Grey’s Anatomy, who came extremely close to winning the Supporting Actress poll by a narrow margin. The end result of it was so close that we were watching the poll on a minute-by-minute basis! Also, Abigail Spencer from Timeless, Joseph Sikora from Power, and Tom Ellis from Lucifer received a large number of votes, though none came as close to winning their respective poll as Drew did.
