Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Halftime Show: Meghan Trainor performs

The Dallas Cowboys Halftime Show at Thanksgiving is an annual tradition. It’s an opportunity in which to raise awareness for the Salvation Army — and, in the process, it’s also a chance to get a memorable performance from a big-name artist. We’ve seen a wide array of performers appear here over the years and this time around, the person at the center of the show is none other than Meghan Trainor. While she broke out with “All About That Bass,” she has gone on to have a number of other hits along the way.

So what did Trainor do in order to kick off the halftime show? Well, she performed “All About That Bass” while wearing what was some sort of modified version of an Emmitt Smith jersey. (Hey, it’s certainly appropriate given the market.) We weren’t altogether sure that she was going to kick things off tonight with her signature hit, but she did transition out of it eventually into some newer material. Take, for example, her new song “Close Your Eyes” that she ended up taking on not too long after the song was over.

In terms of energy, we certainly understand the choice to bring Trainor on board for the halftime show — she’s someone who does a lot of dancing and can keep the crowd entertained and attentive during halftime. She also seemed to embrace the team.

Yet, at the same time, was she the most expected choice? Probably not, given that we’ve seen in recent years the Cowboys choose to bring on board more country-based performers for their halftime show. There may be a little bit more of a tie-in with some of their fans than Meghan Trainor. (Take, last year, when Eric Church hit the stage in order to perform.) We think that Trainor did a fine job overall — she came out, she entertained, and then allowed the game continue not too long after that. We’re not going to say that this is the most memorable halftime performance of all time, or that she did any song that is going to blow anyone’s mind.

Still, in the end you have to recognize how important the cause here — the Cowboys are usually able to raise a significant amount of money every year for the Salvation Army and these halftime performances (and the Thanksgiving game in general) are a great way to lead into the season of giving. Heck, earlier on in this game we saw Ezekiel Elliott put some money in the kettle as a way to effectively kick off the giving himself.

For those wondering, the Cowboys are leading Washington by a score of 10-7 at the half.
