The Good Cop canceled at Netflix; season 2 (seemingly) not happening

We really can’t begin to explain the reasons that this annoys us. For starters, we found the first season to be endlessly charming, fun, and different from most other shows at the service. We’re also writing here as someone who watched the entire ten-episode first season (and wrote about them) over the course of just three days. We’re also an enormous fan of creator Andy Breckman, the creative voice behind one of our other favorite mystery shows out there in Monk.
For now, let’s share the rather-unfortunate statement via Netflix:
“The Good Cop will not return for a second season … We’re grateful to creator Andy Breckman and his fellow producers, writers, the incredible crew and especially stars Tony Danza and Josh Groban for bringing this classic odd couple father-son story to Netflix.”
Could The Good Cop season 2 happen elsewhere?
You never want to say never about these sort of things, even if we haven’t heard anything just yet. The Good Cop is actually one of those rare TV shows that would’ve actually worked better on a traditional network than a streaming service, mostly due to its procedural nature. It could’ve had a nice home on USA, the network that aired Monk for many years, or also TNT with its own history of crime series. Heck, it would’ve worked just fine on a major TV network as a summer series and it still feels like it could, if someone was willing to give it a shot.
If we need to be the driver of the #SaveTheGoodCop movement, WE WILL DRIVE. (Actually, we won’t since we don’t have a driver’s license, but still.)
The Good Cop marks the latest in a long line of recent Netflix cancellations. It’s a list that also includes the likes of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, which are the two most-notable shows to get the ax this fall. American Vandal is also ending, and it has already been announced that Orange is the New Black is ending soon.
The reason for the end of The Good Cop is clearly just that the performance wasn’t there for it — which is a shame, but we also don’t think that it had a lot of promotion and really needed to be out there in more of a prominent way than it was. Josh Groban, Tony Danza, Monica Barbaro, and the rest of the cast deserve better, but we’re not sure that they will get it.
