This weekend on Saturday Night LivePete Davidson did something that he doesn’t do very often: He apologized.

To be specific, Pete actually said that he was sorry to Dan Crenshaw over some of the comments that he made about him last year — which included him making fun of his appearance and also downplaying his military service. Not only did the show do this, but they also brought out Dan Crenshaw himself to have a little bit of fun at Pete’s expense. First, it just so turns out that his ringtone is an Ariana Grande song. Following that, he then proceeded to tell a few jokes at the expense of Pete, as well, including comparing him to Martin Short from The Santa Clause 3. The appearance wasn’t extremely long, but Crenshaw showed that he had a reasonable amount of comic timing.

Basically, Pete proved that he can really take a joke, and Crenshaw also approved that so could he. They came together to give a message in support of veterans as Veterans’ Day is coming and this is a way for everyone to move forward. In the end, if Crenshaw wants to move forward, so can Pete and everyone else. Do we think that everyone out there is going to love this? Probably not, mostly because we live in a world where nothing is ever agreed upon at any time. This is probably going to be as close as we come to it. (We know that Pete could’ve made more of a public apology before now, but this was perfect since it actually was a display of something in a way most people would hear about it.)

Above all else, this was a rare moment of civility on a show that can at times be very one-sided in what they choose to mock; it was nice of the show to do it and nice of Crenshaw to appear. In the end, the message matters the most here, no matter the politics: Support Veterans, especially this time of year. It was also nice to see Crenshaw specifically mention Pete’s father, who passed away on September 11.
