So what did the producers ultimately decide to go with on the series tonight? Think along the lines of Sessions, which made the most sense arguably because you had the cast member in-house for it. Plus, there’s no question that Kate’s impression is funny and, because we haven’t seen it in a rather long time, there was something fun and refreshing that came with seeing her back as this character. Of course, we also do certainly think that it would’ve been great to see some other colorful characters in here, as well.
Just in case you did want something more beyond Kate, we did get a return appearance from Mikey Day and Alex Moffatt as Donald Jr. and Eric Trump. Basically, this was an entire opening that was about classic characters and familiar faces more so than taking on enormous headlines from the past few days. We were somewhat surprised that there was no Alec Baldwin as Trump given that the midterms just happened but, in the end, we do certainly get it.
What we didn’t expect was that we were going to be seeing Sessions singing a cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You” while her moments with Baldwin’s Trump played out in a montage in the backdrop. This was weird, but at the same time, it was also funny. We’ll miss this character, but it did feel like the right time for it.
Also, there was a small cameo at the very end here by Robert De Niro as Robert Mueller. It’s a great character, though admittedly for a while we thought for whatever reason that it was John Goodman playing him.
