Outlander season 4 video: Maria Doyle Kennedy previews Aunt Jocasta
Related Outlander video – Jocasta is among our chief conversation topics in our recent preview for the upcoming season. Check that out at the bottom of this article, and remember to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more! Also, we’ve got an Outlander playlist that is also worth a gander.
In the video below, the woman behind the role of Jocasta in Maria Doyle Kennedy discusses her character and precisely why she is such a force to be reckoned with this season. There is a sense of happiness that she feels over Jamie’s arrival in America, largely because this is an enormous part of her past and someone she has not seen for many decades. She does still have a positive sentiment towards her family, even if she is thousands of miles away from them.
Yet, as Kennedy herself notes, there is an element of her character who is also thinking about herself. She recognizes that Jamie is someone who holds a great deal of value for herself, and with that, there is motivation to want to keep him around for the sake of her own business. Jocasta has done something extremely rare for a woman in her time — built a bit of an empire and a way for her to be immensely profitable. It’s likely a source of great pride for her, but this is complicated massively by the fact that she also keeps slaves. That’s what Claire objects to, and this very thing will allow her to completely ignore some of the character’s more positive attributes. It’s hard to see any good in the midst of something so atrocious.
Here is where we at least envision the dilemma with Jocasta moving into the new season. She wants to be able to have Jamie around, but in doing so, she also gets Claire … who she is certainly not fond of in some ways, based on what we’ve seen. Could there be a way for them to navigate their issues? It’s very well possible, but it’s going to be a challenge. We think Jocasta is very well up for a challenge, so with that, it may become a question of willingness more so than just about anything else.
Be sure to check back tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, as we will have our full review of all that transpires.
