Overall, Sunday’s installment entitled “What Comes After” generated a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and, to go along with that, around 5.4 million viewers. While that’s not bad news at all for cable TV, this isn’t the enormous departure ratings beast that we expected to see this episode generate – we are losing Rick here people! How did the whole world not tune in for this event? It is still the best overall rating for the series since the season 9 premiere, but there’s a reasonably good chance that the numbers are going to tumble rather hard in the weeks ahead without Lincoln on the show. To many out there (including us), Lincoln is the show since it has been Rick’s story that we have been following since the show started. It’s hard to imagine it being anywhere near as popular as it has been without him – just think back to a few years ago even when The Walking Dead was clobbering everything in it’s path. The show is still holding on okay, but it’s not the beast it once was.
One of the things that we’re the most curious about, knowing the information that we do now, is whether or not the movies that are coming featuring Lincoln as Rick are going to draw anywhere near the same ratings that his time on the show did. While there’s no question that he is a popular character and there’s a chance some standalone movies could fare very well, AMC is getting into serious over-exposure territory with this franchise. You’ve already got zombie-related programming on the air for at least 30 or so weeks a season; is adding more to that going to be helpful for this series? We’re not entirely sure. Add to that the fact that Rick isn’t going to be with Michonne, Daryl or Carol and his relationships with these other characters is one of the things that everyone enjoys tuning in for. Is the adventures of Rick and Jadis really going to pull people in? We aren’t convinced.
Rest assured, the ratings for The Walking Dead are ones that we are going to be checking out rather closely for at least the remainder of the season. Stay tuned, as we’ll have a little bit more on that subject once we’ve got it to report.
