Doctor Who season 11 episode 5 expectations: Something different (again)

Sunday night, Doctor Who season 11 episode 5 is going to be bringing you a futuristic setting, plenty of action, and also … confusion? Well, let’s just say that this is going to be very much a different episode from what we’re used to.

The teaser that the BBC series does not offer too much — beyond just a very different setting from “Rose” or “Arachnids in the UK.” There is a threat that seems to be somewhat connected to The Doctor’s past, and this story could be effectively about problem-solving. Unfortunately, The Doctor’s back seems to be more or less against a wall trying to come up with a proper solution here.

One of the things that has been most impressive about season 11 so far is the ability of this series to continue to tell meaningful stories in a wide array of different ways. With “Rosa,” it was somewhat easy to know where some of the power was going to come from — nonetheless, we do think that the story ended up being even more spectacular than we expected going into it. Meanwhile, at the same exact time “Arachnids in the UK” did a wonderful job of turning something horrifying into something with a bit more of a point — it’s still not our favorite Doctor Who episode out there (just not a spider fan), but it may have its supporters. If that does end up being the worst overall episode of season 11, it’s still fair to say that we’re in a good spot. This is a show with a high degree of variance, and one that can alternate between great stories one week and then debatable / controversial ones the next. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that in the slightest.
