Penny Dreadful: City of Angels sequel set at Showtime
Consider this news today that we never expected to hear, but are excited about nonetheless: A new Penny Dreadful is coming to Showtime.
Today, the network announced that Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, a new series from original creator John Logan, is going to be coming to the premium cable network at some point in the future. Production will begin in 2019, and it’s still far too early to have an official premiere date.
As for what we know about the series right now, take a look at the official logline via a network press release:
A spiritual descendant of the PENNY DREADFUL story set in Victorian-era London, the next chapter opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop. This chapter is a bold new vision that will employ all new characters and storylines.
Basically, it feels like this is going to have a rather-different style than the original series, which featured Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, and a number of other cast members. Thematically, though, it may be very much a similar show. Here is what Logan himself had to say about telling a new story and setting it in a new place:
“PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the PENNY DREADFUL London storylines … we will be grappling with specific historical and real world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of PENNY DREADFUL, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”
For us, the biggest thing that we can really hope for is that this series gets to tell a complete story and does not have the same sort of shock, is-that-really-it ending that the original version did. The decision to end the original Penny Dreadful at the point the story was at remains one of the more surprising conclusions that we’ve seen for any show.
For now, let’s pose the following question like this: What do you think about Penny Dreadful: City of Angels being ordered to series? Be sure to share in the attached comments.
