Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: State Attorney’s General, WWE, & Saudi Arabia

Last Week Tonight

This week’s edition of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver took its time in the early going to address some topics from the most-recent episode of the series. With that, we saw a lengthy segment discussing the aftermath of the Saudi Arabia segment from the last episode; that includes the WWE continuing to go forward with their own decision to have an event there, even in spite of some of the concerns that are out there among even wrestlers.

The Saudi Arabia isn’t going away — yet, in two week’s time we doubt anyone will be thinking about it anymore. That’s just the nature of the world we are living in at the moment.

As for the main segment, let’s talk for a moment about the position of State Attorney’s General. Yes, that is the proper way to call them. This segment actually proved to be incredibly entertaining, mostly because of the fact that there was so much gold to mine from these people that we didn’t exactly know about beforehand. Take, for example, AG candidates who love to impersonate Elvis, do karaoke, or create super-expensive coins with their personal motto on them.

What was especially strange, though, was the way in which Oliver ended the show — by figuring out a way to intentionally divert people away from the show so they could visit Vote411.org and learn more about the candidates. Rather than deliver on a promise to bring out Rachael Ray (Which he bragged about throughout the show), he instead brought out an accordion player, bagpipes, and children playing recorders to make the show as loud and annoying as possible. It worked!

Beyond that, this was actually a really compelling segment for the series — it was incredibly funny, but also informative in terms of a part of the government that is often overlooked, but critical for a nation’s future.
