A Million Little Things, The Rookie, Splitting Up Together get more scripts
Today, the network announced that A Million Little Things, The Rookie, The Kids Are Alright, and the aforementioned Jenna Fischer series have an additional script order for four more episodes. That means that they’ll have a chance to stick around longer and, in the event that ABC decides to order more episodes, the writers will be prepared.
Of these four shows, we’re probably the most confident in The Rookie at the moment given that it has a big star in Nathan Fillion and a premise that tends to do really well on primetime television: Cops! Meanwhile, The Kids Are Alright has a great lead-in courtesy of The Conners, and that should help it move in the right direction. This is, of course, assuming that The Conners continues to get pretty good ratings of its own.
We’re a little bit more worried about A Million Little Things. It’s been under a 1.0 rating for a few weeks now, and it didn’t exactly get off to a great start, either. While its ratings have been fairly steady the last couple of installments, we’re still talking about a low-ceiling drama right now that is going to have trouble getting more viewers on board midway through. We do love the cast, though, and that’s the one reason for optimism that we’ve got at the moment when it comes to this series.
Ultimately, we’re going to learn over the next few weeks whether or not ABC ends up ordering more of these shows. For the record, the reason why Splitting Up Together was not given a full 22 episodes from the jump this year is because it originally premiere in the spring. That tends to be the case for second-year shows that didn’t get a full season the first time around.
