The Flash season 5, Black Lightning season 2 taking off midterm election day

Flash season 5 episode 2

While The Flash and Black Lightning have taken on many a foe over time, one that they clearly want to avoid is the midterm elections.

The CW recently put out synopses for a number of their shows for the first full week of November, and it shouldn’t come as a shock as these two shows were left off the list. Their first episodes of the month just so happen to be on Election Day (November 6), and it makes sense to avoid programming then — even if it does fall within November sweeps.

While live+same-day ratings don’t mean everything to The CW, they do matter a great deal … and it’s pretty darn clear that this is going to be a rather-busy day with many networks airing election results. That’s also going to be where many eyes gravitate towards. It’s one of the biggest nights of the year when it comes to politics, and we understand trying to get out of its way from a programming perspective.

Can we also make the argument that there are plenty of people out there who could use new episodes of The Flash / Black Lightning as a distraction? Certainly, but television is a business and the benefits do not outweigh the potential losses here. It’s better to just take the week off and resume programming a week later. After all, it’s not like The CW is losing an episode of either of these shows; there’s just going to be one airing beyond November 6 that would have otherwise been a repeat. Everything works itself out at the end of the day.

Before we get around to the election, the good news is that there are still two more episodes airing — one on November 23, and then an additional one on the other side come November 30. We’ll have a chance to discuss a lot of great stuff over the next couple of weeks. (You can preview what lies ahead on The Flash now over at this link.)
