Sherlock creators’ new Dracula project officially heading to Netflix

Netflix ratings

It’s been a while since we heard anything about Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ new Dracula project. Yet, the news coming out today is rather great!

Today, Netflix announced that the BBC One series is going to air on the streaming service in America. Much like Moffat and Gatiss’ other series in Sherlock, this will air over the course of three 90-minute installments.

In a new statement, here is what Moffat and Gatiss had to say about their new series: “There have always been stories about great evil. What’s special about Dracula is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero.”

What we’ve learned about this Dracula project to date is that the series will be set in 1897, and will feature the title character coming from Transylvania over to Victorian London, where there is sure to be a wide array of potential victims. We anticipate that this is going to be a violent but exciting and thought-provoking series. The real irony here is that for Sherlock, Moffat and Gatiss decided that they are going to be focusing entirely in the past.

There are still a number of big announcements about casting and a whole lot more, but there is plenty of time in order to figure all of that out. As for whether or not this new series means that Gatiss and Moffat are moving away from Sherlock, not necessarily; yet, at the same time we also think that there is no immediate hurry for it, either. Much of that has to do with assembling and organizing it, and that may take years in order to figure it out.

For now, though, we are certainly interested in seeing what these two writers, who are the best of just about anyone out there, end up doing with this particular property. It’s such a bold, ambitious idea, mostly because Dracula is the sort of series that has been adapted a billion or so times already. Is there anything new that can be done with it?
