NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 premiere review: Who survived the cliffhanger?
For most of the episode, it really was a battle for survival for Deeks, Kensi, Sam, and Callen in the aftermath of the explosion. Thanks to some luck and a little trickery, Sam and Callen managed to get away at first; meanwhile, Kensi managed to get herself and Deeks a temporary reprieve as the installment went along … but they were also far from being out of the woods. Deeks was still unconscious, and it was not until around halfway through the episode (with fantasies included) when he actually did manage to come around. It was then it was clear that he had a concussion, but that he was going to be okay … at least in due time. There were still some problems that these two had to go through, including being betrayed by someone who proclaimed that he was willing to help them.

For those of you who are rooting for Densi, it seems that they were able to recover from much of their turmoil by the end of the epsiode. Now, moving forward they have to continue to see whether or not there is a way to make their relationship work in the long term. It is at least nice that Deeks is thinking about having kids, right? (For those wondering, the song choice at the end of the episode was “All of Me Wants All of You” from Sufjan Stevens — one of our favorite artists.)
The series regular who was actually in the worst overall shape following the premiere (at least among the good guy) was Callen, who did suffer a number of major projects in between his lung and his spine. More than likely, there is going to be a lengthy recovery process that this character is going to have to go through in order to get better.
Of course, there was one other character who didn’t make it: Harley Hidoko, whose remains were confirmed near the end of the episode. That’s a shame, given that we did come to really like that character last season.
CarterMatt Verdict
NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 kicked off with a great, action-packed episode that did put many of its characters in precarious positions. Yet, most of these characters seem to have nine lives! It is sad to see that not everyone (RIP Hidoko) made it out alive, but everyone else can start to push forward.
