Chicago Fire season 7 premiere review: The status of Casey and Dawson

Chicago Fire season 7

While there are a number of different things to discuss when it comes to the Chicago Fire season 7 premiere, there’s one that we know matters the most to people out there: The status of Casey and Dawson as a couple.

For those of you who are rooting for the two of them, the good news is this: The two characters are technically still together. However, here is the bad news: She isn’t coming back. Monica Raymund did make a surprise appearance at the end of the episode, which was nice since we thought that the earlier appearance from her (via Skype) was it. This was a way in which for the show to offer up a little bit of closure on a storyline that ended rather abruptly with the season 6 finale.

Unfortunately, Dawson is not coming back to Firehouse 51 anytime soon. She decided to depart at the end of tonight’s episode and go back to Puerto Rico, where she has a permanent job there helping with the operation. We do feel like eventually, something is going to have to give when it comes to Casey and Dawson moving forward. Maybe this dynamic will work this season, but can you really have the two be married and live apart from each other forever?

While all of this was going on for Casey and Dawson, there were some other problems impacting Firehouse 51 elsewhere. Take for example, seeing what transpired in terms of Assistant Deputy Commissioner Gorsch. He’s a new appointee from new Commissioner Grissom, someone who has a history with Boden and does not appear to be altogether keen when it comes to listening to some of what he has to say. Instead, he’s going to cause a little chaos at Firehouse 51 as he challenges authority and does whatever he can in order to uproot everything.

Meanwhile, we also had a chance to see the arrival of Emily Foster, Brett’s new partner and someone who seems at least interested in forming a good friendship with her. She’s bounced around a little, and it also turns out that she has a complicated backstory involving medicine that is not entirely clear at the moment.

CarterMatt Verdict

There were some really fun moments in this episode when it comes to the supporting characters, but it will be best remembered for Raymund’s return and getting a better chance to say farewell to that character. It seems like Monica is moving on to a big new job elsewhere and we certainly do understand her desire to try new things; yet, we’re very much going to miss her as a part of this series.
