Fall TV Preview: Should we have faith in God Friended Me on CBS?

Throughout much of the 2018 Fall TV season, there are a few common threads that you are going to see. One of the biggest ones is going to be shows that tonally make you feel good.

Is this the This Is Us factor? We do think that networks are looking for their own version of that — something warm, something hopeful, and something that can make you smile. These are polarizing times, and shows can be seen as an escape from that. God Friended Me is in an interesting place here in that it’s a show that leans into religion on some level. That may make it a little bit more appealing to Christian viewers, but at the same time we don’t think that this is a show just for faith-based audiences. It’s a show that is mostly about hope and watching characters find a way to believe in something greater.

One thing that we will say about God Friended Me is that it has a great cast — Brandon Michael Hall of The Mayor stars as Miles, an outspoken atheist and podcast host. He’s someone who speaks out against the teachings of the Bible, even though his father (Scandal alum Joe Morton) is a podcast host. Add in here The Flash alum Violett Beane and you have three compelling people from the jump. The premise of the show is that Miles is friended on Facebook by someone claiming to be God, and this person (God or otherwise) has a knack for changing lives and bringing people together.

While we do think the trailer below does hit everything a little bit on the nose and there are concerns of this show being a bit too heavy-handed in its approach, what appeals to us about it from the jump is that it’s hopeful, optimistic, and it could end up having some fun moments. It’s in a tricky timeslot Sunday nights at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, though — it’s going to incur a lot of NFL delays and could get lost in the shuffle. This is probably one of the reasons why CBS has already put the pilot online; they want viewers to get hooked sooner rather than later.
