Game of Thrones season 8: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau surprised at Jaime’s longevity

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones season 8 is premiering on HBO next summer and if you’re surprised that Jaime Lannister made it that far, you’re not alone — the actor behind the role in Nikolaj Coster-Waldau feels the say way. When you think about the dangerous positions that this character has been in, plus his own twisted sense of morality, there were a number of times in which his life could’ve ended. It’s a shock that he is still there, and even larger one that the same could be said for his sister Cersei. We’re equally surprised that she is still sitting on the Iron Throne entering the home stretch — we’re not sure that she will be there by the end of the series, but she can at least keep it warm for now.

Speaking on the subject of his character’s longevity to The Huffington Post, Coster-Waldau had the following to say:

“It was a surprise … God, every time we got a new script I thought, ‘OK, this is probably going to be the one.’ But no. The Lannister kids made it to the end.”

Coster-Waldau made it equally clear that he is very much happy with the way in which the show is ending:

“I wrote the writers when I was finished reading and just said, ‘I don’t think you could’ve done a better job at finishing this story.’ [The ending is] very satisfying but also very surprising and all the things that I was hoping for.”

What is so interesting entering the final six episodes is everything that there is still left to resolve, including key several relationships plus also the key battle against the White Walkers and then also the status of the Iron Throne. The final season is going to have some of the biggest battles in the history of television, but even with those, hopefully there will be a chance to see some great performances and moments for some of the characters.
