Mr. Robot season 4 will officially be final season

Mr. Robot season 3

The story of Elliot Alderson on Mr. Robot is coming to an end sooner than many may have thought.

This morning, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed rumors that the upcoming fourth season will be the last one for the series on USA. The first seasons of this series was a critical revelation and while it does remain popular, it has fallen more off the awards-show map and the ratings momentum has stalled. While the series has long been one of the most-pirated cable series out there, it has struggled to get viewers to watch the show live — though it has performed very well in younger demographics.

In the end, though, this decision seems to be more based on the show’s creative rather than any commercial success. There were talks on a fifth season and, in the end, the compromise here seems to be that the fourth season of Mr. Robot is going to run for twelve episodes — four more than was originally planned. This should give creator Sam Esmail and the rest of the team time to craft the perfect story that will hopefully satisfy viewers.

In a statement via the aforementioned publication, here is what Esmail had to say on ending the series:

“When I first created the world of Mr. Robot, I thought it would be a niche television series with a small, cult following. Over the past three years, it has become so much more, and I am continually humbled by the show’s recognition and by the amazing cast and crew that work tirelessly to help bring my vision to life … Since day one, I’ve been building toward one conclusion — and in breaking the next season of Mr. Robot, I have decided that conclusion is finally here. Everyone on the creative team, including the amazing people at USA and UCP, didn’t want to say goodbye, but we ultimately have too much respect for Elliot’s journey to extend past its inevitable ending. Therefore, season four will serve as the final chapter of the Mr. Robot story. To fans of the show: thank you for the past three years, and I can’t wait to share this exciting final season with you.”
