Homeland season 8 will (officially) be final season at Showtime
Today at TCA (per THR), the network’s head in David Nevins made it clear that Homeland is in fact coming to a close. This makes sense, given that it was hard to really envision how it could go on based on everything else that we’ve had a chance to hear as of late. Let’s just put things this way: We had already heard via star Claire Danes that she was looking to close the door on being Carrie after season 8, while the showrunner in Alex Gansa had no intention of sticking around. Without those two at this point, what else is really there with Homeland? These two are huge components in the show and major reasons why it ever worked well in the first place.
One of the things that we do love here is Nevins calling out the media in attendance for one of our biggest pet peeves — calling a series “canceled” when, in reality, it is just ending:
“I do not want to hear the word cancellation … Alex Gansa will bring the show to its proper conclusion.”
For the record, “canceled” is the show you use when a series doesn’t get a chance to wrap up with a proper ending because the network is cutting its legs out from under them. Showtime has to be thrilled with Homeland given all of the Emmy love that it has received over the years and, to go along with that, it is also one of the longest-running drama series in the history of the network. Eight seasons is something to celebrate and not something to be regretful about. There are no “what if it lasted longer” sentiments with a show like this.
