Sharp Objects season 2 will (likely) not happen
For anyone out there still crossing your fingers for a Sharp Objects season 2, this may be the time to uncross them. It doesn’t appear (at least for now) that HBO is going to do with this limited series the same thing that they did with Big Little Lies and True Detective.
Remember here that sometimes, it’s better off to just have a clear ending rather than continue a franchise beyond its natural lifespan. True Detective season 2 was a huge disappointment, and while nobody knows for sure about how the second season of Big Little Lies’ is going to do, there are reasons to be worried about its future as well.
Speaking (per Deadline) while at the TCA Summer Press Tour, HBO head Casey Bloys made it clear why there are no plans for a season 2, and a lot of that has to do with a sentiment of the show’s star in Amy Adams:
“Unlike Big Little Lies where all of the stars wanted to come back, Sharp Objects, it’s a very dark character, very dark material … Amy doesn’t want to live in this character again and I can’t blame her, it’s a lot to take on for an actress. So no plans for a second season. We are very happy with this living as a limited series.”
This is the right move, mostly because it always is better to leave audience wanting more rather than coming back and giving them more story even though there was a clear end. Some of the best shows are the ones that go too early and you spend the better part of your life wanting more of them (just ask any fan of Firefly). This seems to be the case here. There is a definite end coming, and to us, the better thing to hope for could be Adams being involved in some other project at HBO.
