Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus planned to leave The Walking Dead together

While Norman Reedus is not leaving The Walking Dead at some point this season, there was a time when he and Andrew Lincoln talked about leaving the series together. Consider this a little more proof that sometimes, things change. Lincoln was ready to leave this year and, fortunately for many viewers, Reedus was not. He was ready to keep the story going for Daryl Dixon a little bit longer.

Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, here is some of what Norman had to say about the idea of the initial pact that the two guys made:

“We made a pact … I think it was like season 3 or 4. We’re like, ‘If you leave, I leave. Right?’ And that was the thing.”

While Reedus was not ready to go at this point and leave Daryl behind, he did make it clear that he understood why his castmate had made that particular decision to spend more time with his family in London:

“When he told me he was thinking about doing this, I get it. I have a son in New York, and I’m constantly bouncing back and forth all these nine years to go see him. And I get it. He’s got two beautiful children, a beautiful wife. His whole family’s awesome, and you can’t be mad at him for going. It’s very understandable, but I’m going to miss the hell out of him.”

Ultimately, the show will go on for Daryl on The Walking Dead, and in the aftermath of everything that is going to happen moving forward we do think we’re gearing up for him to have more of a leadership position than ever. There is something very interesting that could come out of seeing him tested in that sort of way; we don’t want to see Daryl doing the same thing that he’s done so many years before. It’s great to see him tested, and this is an opportunity to have that happen.
