Deadwood movie officially ordered at HBO; filming starts this fall
Today at the TCA Summer Press Tour, HBO’s programming head Casey Bloys officially confirmed that the movie continuation of the epic series is going to start filming this October. There were many challenges that came with finding a way to get everything together, including sorting out the schedules of all of the various cast members. Yet, it does feel like the network has figured out a way in which to make that happen.
If there is one silver lining when it comes to Kim Dickens’ departure from Fear the Walking Dead (which was not of her own choosing), it is that it gives her a chance to come back and do more of Deadwood without any major complications. This is something to celebrate!
Now, of course the next challenge is just crossing your fingers and hoping that the upcoming movie is legitimately good after waiting all these years. Given that the original show has an enormous cult following (we are members of that cult), this is not going to be the easiest audience in the world to please. Expectations are through the roof and we want to have the movie give us a nice wrap up after we had the carpet pulled out from under us with it’s cancellation.
Given the filming start date, as of right now our expectation is that the Deadwood movie is one that will probably come out in 2019. It could be ready by the summer or the fall, but in general, it’s going to be a huge year for HBO coming up. Remember that the network also has the second season of Big Little Lies, the final season of Game of Thrones, and also a long-awaited third season of True Detective on tap. That’s a lot of great programming to get to, but the good news with this movie is that it can be basically plugged in anywhere. Fans are going to watch whenever they want to put it out. Get your whiskey ready folks!
