Doctor Who season 11 promo: Jodie Whittaker & ‘new best friends’

The first new Doctor Who season 11 promo featuring real footage was unveiled today at San Diego Comic-Con, and it feels clear to say there are reasons for excitement from it! It’s high-energy, imaginative, and it makes us psyched to see exactly where Jodie Whittaker and executive producer Chris Chibnall take us.

While it feels like there are a few playful nods to the show’s history here, at the same time it also feels very much like a reintroduction to the series and a chance to bring new viewers on board — something that Doctor Who does very much need in 2018. We’ve got a new lead, a new storyteller, and many new companions The Doctor seems to be treating as her friends. Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole, and Bradley Walsh are all joining Whittaker on these adventures — everyone other than Walsh was present at the Comic-Con panel today.

Probably the best thing that we like about the trailer is simple: The tone. While we do think that Peter Capaldi was a cheerful Doctor at times, there was also a darkness and eeriness to him at times. With the climate that is going on in the world right now, it feels like a welcome return to a Matt Smith-esque Doctor, someone who has their demons but also an upbeat spirit and a warmness.

We should also make one thing rather clear here: This is not a trailer! This brings us back to one of our longstanding pet peeves: Calling something a “trailer” when it runs for less than 45 seconds. This is just a proper promo, but an exciting one at that. New episodes start airing this fall, so we’re not going to have to wait too much longer in order to learn what’s next.
