Supergirl season 4 filming begins, without star Melissa Benoist

Supergirl season 4 filming is officially underway! Yet, it is also fair to call this situation a little bit different than most others.

Why is that? For at least the first few weeks of production, the set is going to be operating without star Melissa Benoist, who is currently performing on Broadway and will continue to do so until August. It’s rare that you see a situation like this with the lead of a series, but we feel like the producers have figured out a way to make things work.

How is Supergirl telling their story without actually using Supergirl? We feel like one of the things that they’re probably going to do is use doubles as often as possible in order to cut down on Benoist’s shooting time. Meanwhile, it’s possible that they may just film the first batch of episodes out of order, working over the next few weeks on scenes that don’t feature Benoist at the center of them. We suppose that it’s possible in theory that the writers came up with a few episodes at the start of the season without Kara in them at all, but that would be a strange thing for a show like Supergirl to do. Without the title character, how much of a series is there? We know that there is a larger cast, but Supergirl was the draw here from the start.

The good news is that Benoist is going to be present at San Diego Comic-Con later this month with the rest of the cast, and while there it’s certainly possible that we’ll get some other information regarding just what we can expect to lie ahead. There are still some characters who need to be cast (or at least announced); meanwhile, we’re also hoping that we will get a better sense before long as to who the Big Bad for the fourth season could be. It’d be rather refreshing to see someone who is 1) pure evil and 2) very aware of how evil they are.
