Poldark season 4: Christian Brassington on Whitworth’s surprise turn

We should start off this particular Poldark season 4 story with a spoiler warning: The following touches on events from Sunday night’s episode. If you are behind on the series, we suggest that you stop reading now.

Still with us? Then read on to see what Christian Brassington had to say about Ossie Whitworth’s surprising fate in season 4 episode 5…

Well, that’s it. Ossie is dead. The Reverend / all around terrible human being was killed on Sunday night’s new episode by Rowella’s husband Arthur, a man desperate for vengeance after learning about the secret relationship going on within his own home. This death is likely going to be a jumping-off point for the remainder of the story this season; Drake finds himself a possible suspect in what happens, but that may not be anywhere near as devastating as being turned away by Morwenna, the one person he truly loves more so than anyone else.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Brassington (who gained a significant amount of weight for the role) spoke out about the experience of playing Whitworth and saying goodbye to the character:

“I am personally sad to see him go; I just loved playing him, being in the show and being with the cast … So I’m sad that he’s gone. But as a character – and there are few people that you could ever say this about – maybe the world is a better place without Reverend Osborne Whitworth.

“I don’t know whether I’ve ever wished death upon anyone, but he certainly deserved some sort of retribution, didn’t he? He was awful.”

You know that Brassington is a tremendous actor just via the way in which he was able to make Osbourne so detestable through all of his various appearances on the series. This is a man who started off incredibly unlikable and over the course of the past two seasons, it only got worse as he forced Morwenna into intercourse and even tried to institutionalize her if she refused. Even with him gone, we’re still worried about her future for a number of different reasons — one of which we’re still hesitant to speculate on simply because it’s far too sad to do so.
