SIX canceled at History, no season 3 coming for military drama

Unfortunately, SIX is not going to have a third tour of duty over on History.

Per a report from Deadline, the network has formally decided to cancel the series midway through its season 2 run. As for the reasoning behind the decision being made now as opposed to at the end of the season, this has to do more so than anything with the contracts expiring for many of the show’s cast members.

If you think back to season 1, SIX was almost immediately a breakout hit. It told the story of an important SEAL Team tasked with some of the most dangerous missions on Earth and, beyond that, it had a fairly incredible cast. Unfortunately, there were some problems in between season 1 and season 2, most notably the fact that there was such a lengthy hiatus in between seasons. History tried to drum up more attention for season 2 by casting Olivia Munn in a prominent role, but that turned out to not make much of a difference. The sole reason for the cancellation seems to be ratings-based and that’s a shame for everyone who loved it. SIX had a strong supporting cast and there was certainly potential for it to continue to be successful in the years to come had the ratings been a little bit stronger.

The cancellation of SIX does continue forward a trend that has been ongoing over the past year of military-themed dramas not faring altogether well. We saw this first and foremost back with Valor on The CW this past fall, and then it extended over to The Brave at NBC. To date, SEAL Team at CBS is the only one of these shows that has been renewed for another season. This is just a format that, as of late, has not fared anywhere near as well as it did back in the day when you had shows like M*A*S*H dominating the airwaves.
