Ratings: Yellowstone episode 3, Queen Sugar, and Animal Kingdom

Yellowstone

Finding out the Yellowstone episode 3 ratings was an enormous curiosity for us this week, largely because the first two episodes of the series posted some of the best totals for a series since Spike became the Paramount Network. However, with mixed reviews we weren’t quite sure what the retention rate would be for a series like this.

Well, we’ve had a chance to see that now and, for the most part, it’s reasonably positive. While the show did lose more than 20% of its viewership to finish with just over 2 million viewers, that’s still better than the majority of the other cable series that are out there. If it keeps most of this audience for the remainder of the season, how do you consider this anything other than an undisputed hit and of the network’s biggest success stories of the year? The only concern comes if the show continues to lose 20% of its audience one week to the next. Eventually, that’ll signal trouble and that the series just isn’t anywhere near as good at retaining viewers as it really should be.

As for some of the other cable ratings of note…

Queen Sugar – How about some more positive news? After slipping in the ratings earlier this year, the show continues to build back some of its audience. Wednesday night’s new episode managed to generate in total around 1.17 million viewers. That’s a healthy improvement versus the previous week, and it’s certainly enough to give us a little more hope for the show’s future. If the numbers continue to rise, that will certainly help.

Animal Kingdom – Finally, let’s turn over to the TNT drama, which has been a remarkable performer all season long despite losing someone in Baz in the early going this season. This past episode ended up generating over 1.31 million viewers and a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which help its overall averages and also the comparisons to the second season. Based on where it is right now, we’re willing to say that a fourth season is a lock.
