Emilia Clarke, Kumail Nanjiani, Christine Baranski invited to join Motion Picture Academy
Some of the familiar faces to CarterMatt readers invited to be a part of the Academy include Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), Christine Baranski (The Good Fight), Tiffany Haddish (The Last OG), Mindy Kaling (formerly of The Mindy Project), Taye Diggs (Empire), former Gotham series regular Jada Pinkett Smith, and one-time Chappelle’s Show star Dave Chappelle. These invitations come at a time when the Academy is trying to prioritize adding fresh talent to their rank and also people who may have been overlooked over the years.
While technically most invitations are sent out following a performer’s success in the film world, many of these roles are connected in some form to achievements on the small screen. For example, Game of Thrones was the big break for Clarke and without shows like The Office and The Mindy Project, there’s a good chance that we would not know the comedic voice of Mindy Kaling. It’s a pretty cool crew to be a part of.
With these new invitations in mind, the overall membership of the Academy is going to be over 9,000 members, and if there are names continually added at this rate, we imagine that it could be over a whopping 10,000 people before too long. The goal here should be for the organization to represent some of the best and brightest across all walks of life.
