Supernatural season 14 will run for just 20 episodes
What does this news, per TVLine, mean? Save for the third season, which was shortened because of the Hollywood Writers’ Strike, this is the shortest season in the series’ history. Beyond that, there’s probably not too much to read from it. There hasn’t been any public reason given for the shake-up, but there could be a fun different causes for this happening.
Creative reasons – Maybe the writers have just determined now that it’s better to do twenty episodes a season than 22 or 23, and in doing this, they are going to be able to pack more great content in as a result of that.
Exhaustion reasons – Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins are all parents. Meanwhile, they have all been doing this job for a long time now. It’s certainly possible that this move could be to give them all a little bit of a longer hiatus as a reward for all of their hard work. If doing shorter seasons is a way that we get to keep Supernatural on the air for a rather-long time still, personally we are all for it.
Network reasons – We do wonder if The CW is going to start looking at shortening many of their shows in order to double up on content or simply change up the structure of some of their programming where there is less filler and more meat. It’s something that we’re seeing Freeform do with some of their own content, but the tricky thing that can come with this is that fewer episodes often means less pay for the crew if they are getting paid on a per-episode rate.
Regardless of the reason, we don’t take this as a sign at all that the show is near the end … though we are still bitter about The CW not picking up the spin-off Wayward Sisters.
