Cable Ratings: Yellowstone, Colony season 3, and Queen Sugar

Yellowstone

Welcome to another edition of Cable Ratings! We’ve got three more shows to break down here, but we want to begin with the much-hyped premiere of Yellowstone over on the Paramount Network.

Through one episode, we have to think that the network is actually feeling rather great. Maybe it is the presence the Kevin Costner, or maybe it is the popularity of the Western genre. Either way, this is a show that is starting off with over 2.8 million viewers and also over a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This is the sort of start that this network was likely hoping for with one of their original properties — really, any cable series getting close to 3 million viewers in 2018 is a huge win.

If the show continues to be at this level, it’s hard to argue against Yellowstone as anything other than a bona fide hit. However, we’re a little bit concerned about the lukewarm reception we’ve seen for the premiere and how that could impact the numbers down the road. This is something we’re going to continue to watch.

As for some other notable ratings…

Queen Sugar – The own series continues to rise following a dip earlier this summer. Wednesday night’s new episode matched the 0.4 rating it had posted the week prior, but beyond that it improved slightly up to 1.14 million viewers — its best live total since its premiere. We have to think that this, plus the show’s impressive performance on social media trending just about every week, makes it a pretty strong contender to return for more episodes.

Colony – Meanwhile, let’s get to the show we’re a little bit worried about this season. The USA drama posted a 0.2 rating and about 730,000 viewers for Wednesday night’s new episode, and while that is reasonably in line with some other performances this season, the show overall is down more than 30% year to year. If you love Colony, this should be the time to start fighting to save it.
