Take Two ratings expectations: What should they be for ABC?
There is a universe with this show in which we can see it easily getting off to a pretty strong start (at least for a summer show) and posting somewhere around a 1.2 or 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic. After all, it’s an upbeat crime procedural with known leads and a premise that is easy to digest. We also think that there is a certain element of nostalgia around a show like this, largely because it brings something to the table that viewers have loved for many years on other shows. This is a throwback in some ways to a Bones, a Castle, a Psych, or some other comedic crime procedurals within that vein. We’ll withhold our overall take on the show for now (we’ll post that tonight), but we will say that if you like any of these shows, it’s certainly worth checking out the premiere.
So while we can consider the series to be a hit, we also do imagine a universe where viewers just forget to check it out and it only draws something like a 0.6 or 0.7 in the demo. It wouldn’t be an enormous shock just because there are so many other things for viewers to do in the summer and ABC may not have promoted well enough for all viewers to know about it.
It’s rare that we foresee such a wide array of success or disappointment for a show going into it, but part of the problem with Take Two is that there isn’t too much of a recent precedent for a show like this airing this time of the year. We think that ABC would be happy with a rating that is somewhat in between — even if it averages a 0.7 over the season, it may have a chance at coming back since scripted shows often do not fare that well in the summer. We just want it to premiere higher than that, largely because shows tend to fall in the numbers after their first episode.
