Cable Ratings: Cloak & Dagger, Queen Sugar, and Into the Badlands
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger – The Marvel series got off to one of the best starts for a Freeform series in years last years. Of course, that does raise the stakes for the show in episode 2, especially since the vast majority of shows tend to lose viewers for their second outing.
Alas, the same can be said here. Despite positive reviews and plenty of buzz, episode 3 was down more than 20% in the live+same-day ratings versus episode 2, posting a 0.2 rating and just under 600,000 viewers. Is this a huge problem for the show? If the ratings stay where they are, not really. We’re not even sure that too many people have even bailed on the show. What we often see with new series is viewers watch the first episode live to see if they like it, and then decide to set their DVR and watch the rest later at their own leisure. That’s even more true for shows with a young audience like this.
Queen Sugar – Here’s some great news for the OWN series! After a couple of dips, the series recovered quite nicely for this past episode, generating a 0.3 rating in the demo and 1.13 million viewers. These are the show’s best numbers since the premiere and when you think about this and the social-media footprint that Queen Sugar has, there are always reasons to be optimistic in regards to the future.
Into the Badlands – We anticipated there would be a jump in the ratings with the Fear the Walking Dead midseason finale coming on before it, and that proved to be the case. The show generated a 0.3 rating in the demo and also 1.06 million viewers. We’d probably be a little more worried about the series’ future if AMC didn’t have a good track record for giving shows proper endings.
