How to make Instinct season 2 even stronger on CBS

Instinct episode 1

Earlier this year, the good news officially came out: An Instinct season 2 is coming to CBS for the upcoming 2018-19 season! We’re very excited about that, but to go along with it we do have many other questions. For starters, why has the network promoted the Alan Cumming series the way that they have as of late, and is there a way that they can actually fix this and do a better job in the future? We certainly hope so!

For starters, our #1 piece of advice here is very simple to write about and for the network to follow: Try to actually not air new episodes of the show on the Sunday before Memorial Day. That is basically, in TV terms, the equivalent of airing on Saturday, never good.

It’s with that in mind that the first thing we would ask of CBS is to make sure that Instinct season 2 has a slightly favorable schedule, and that’s something that hopefully will happen if it premieres in the same timeslot next spring. You see, the slightly-later start time for season 1 was complicated and compounded by a few different factors, including the Winter Olympics taking over much of February. If the series can air starting in early March, maybe it avoids Memorial Day Weekend altogether.

Beyond just that, we do think it would benefit from getting at least some sort of greater promotion in terms of Dylan Reinhart, what makes the character special, and some of the charm that exists with his partnership with Lizzie. We would market of course to the CBS target demo but also to the LGBTQ community and viewers who don’t typically watch the network to show that there is a smart, inclusive show that is waiting for them here. Not only do you have an openly gay lead character but you also have diversity across the board in the supporting cast.

Finally, let’s talk guest stars. Could you get some of Cumming’s former The Good Wife cast members to turn up? Getting an appearance from an Archie Panjabi, a Chris Noth, or a Christine Baranski would do wonders for getting even more of that fanbase to turn up.

Ultimately, we’re grateful that Instinct is getting a season 2 and with the intelligence that this show has, it does feel like there is potential for it to be so much more successful than it is. It already has some impressive total-viewer figures; we just wish there was a way to get more younger viewers on board.
